Many men suffer from thinning hair. This can often lead to complete baldness. This thinning hair typically starts to occur once men have hit puberty, then continues throughout their life. It is a very common issue with around 50% of middle-aged men having lost half of their hair follicles. Just because it is so common does not mean that it doesn’t have an effect on their self-esteem. A lot of men who suffer from male-patterned baldness have low self-confidence. Now more men are increasingly becoming interested in cosmetic techniques to address their hair loss. At Cosmetica Plastic Surgery & Anti-Aging we understand the concerns of balding men and offer many options to help address them.
Our doctor will take a look at the area where your hair is thinning as well as a donor area and will assess the quality and type before choosing a treatment. The different treatment options are:
- Strip Harvesting: This method removes a strip of hair, typically from the back of the head, and then dissects it to prepare for implantation into the recipient area.
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): For this method, small groups of hair are harvested from a larger area around the head. This hair is then implanted into the treatment site.
- Flap Surgery: This surgery removes a section of the bald scalp; this section is then replaced with skin that contains hair follicles.
- Scalp Reduction: This involves removing a section of the bald scalp. Then pulling the hairline that’s left forward to fill in the bald spot.
There are many different causes associated with hair loss in men. Commonly, it is genetic with men inheriting it from one of their parents, but it can also be caused by hormonal changes, large amounts of stress, medical conditions, or certain medications. If you start to experience sudden symptoms of hair loss you may want to speak with a doctor about what may be causing it. Many men suffer from hair loss in some way, men can start to see certain signs and symptoms such as:
- Gradual thinning on the head
- Circular or patchy bald spots
- Patches of scaling over the scalp
- Sudden Loosening of the hair
There are various methods involved in hair replacement or transplantation procedures. Depending on the area of hair loss as well as the goals of the patients, the treatment plan will vary from patient-patient. By making a consultation appointment with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Vinas, he and his team can create a treatment plan based on each patient’s specific needs. All of the procedures involve moving hair follicles from one area of the body to the area that is lacking in hair. Dr. Vinas will go over all of the treatment options with you during the consultation.
“Received top notch service and attention! Everyone was very pleasant, professional and administered treatment exactly as requested; with a great outcome. I’ll definitely return for additional treatments.”
Each method of hair transplantation is done under sedation. Most commonly surgeons use local anesthesia but, in some cases, an IV sedation can be added. The sedation techniques help patients to feel relaxed during the procedure as well as minimizing bleeding or discomfort. The donor area will be prepared for the removal of the hair follicles and then the implantation will proceed. The type of sutures and scarring will vary depending on the technique used for treatment.
To make sure that each of our patients is prepared for their hair transplant procedure, our team will provide complete instructions to help in pre-operative and post-operative care. After the surgery many patients will need to wear a dressing on the scalp for a couple days to protect from infection and minimize bleeding. The scalp may be very sensitive for the first week following the treatment. Many patients return to work within two days, but strenuous activity should be monitored for the first-week post-treatment. It may take time to see the full results from a hair transplant but then the results can be enjoyed for a lifetime.
