Hair loss is a very common condition, over half of all people in the United States experience some form of hair loss in their lifetime. Though this condition is common, it still has lasting effects on those that experience it. These impacts can be low self-esteem, depression, and even anxiety. Many patients who start seeing thinning hair or other signs of hair loss look for treatments to remedy this. At Cosmetica Plastic Surgery & Anti-Aging we offer many innovative hair loss treatments such as the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) transplant method.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Many men and women who experience hair loss have this because of some genetic predisposition. This is true in male-patterned baldness and many women who experience hair thinning. Many men with this genetic predisposition start to show once puberty hits. With women, this can start to happen gradually. Though this is the main reason, there are many causes of hair loss in both men and women. The best way to know the root cause of your hair loss is by speaking with a doctor. Major causes of hair loss can be:

  • Stress
  • Medical Conditions
  • Hormones
  • Medications
  • A Nutrient Deficiency
  • Menopause
  • Pregnancy

What is Follicular Unit Extraction?

This treatment option has become very popular over the course of the last couple of decades. It has become an extremely effective method for those who choose this transplant option. The FUE hair transplant is characterized by taking small groups of hair from donor areas. These donor areas are places on the head that have large areas of thicker hair to be harvested. The harvested hair is then implanted into the area for treatment. This method is available to our hair loss patients here at Cosmetica Plastic Surgery & Anti-Aging.

The FUE Process

This process can take from one to a few hours to complete. If a larger area is needed for treatment, then this can be done in a couple appointments. To minimize any pain or discomfort local anesthesia will be used in the treatment areas. For the procedure, a small tool is used to make a micro-incision in the skin around a follicular unit. This separates the follicular unit from the surrounding tissue. This part is extracted from the scalp. This process of pulling out follicles is repeated until the desired amount is reached. Then the treatment area is prepared by making tiny recipient sites where the harvested follicles will be inserted. These follicles will then grow into healthy hair. The small, micro-incisions will completely heal within a week with very minimal scarring which will be virtually unnoticeable.

Who is a Good Candidate?

There is no perfect candidate for hair transplantation. Anyone who is experiencing hair loss may be a good candidate for the Follicular Unit Extraction treatment. Candidates who are good for the FUE hair replacement have had their hair loss well-established as well as having a good amount of hair to make the harvesting easier. By making a consultation appointment with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Vinas, he can examine your hair and the quality to know if the FUE hair treatment is a good option for you.

FUE Recovery

The procedure, as well as recovery time for the follicular unit extraction treatment, is fairly quick. The recovery time for this is only a couple days, most patients return to work and normal activities within two days following the treatment. Some crusting of the grafted areas may last for a week to ten days. Dr. Vinas will talk with you about the procedure and recovery time, so you feel well-prepared before undergoing the procedure.
