In the State of Florida, up to 4L of pure fat can be removed with one session of liposuction in properly accredited facilities. On the other hand, when liposuction is performed at the same time as a tummy tuck or some other procedure, the maximum amount of fat that can legally be removed is 1L.
These legal restrictions hold true regardless of the physician or the facility where the procedure is performed and have been established for safety reasons.
In evaluating patients who present for and would be best suited with a tummy tuck, we may recommend liposuction as a separate procedure before the tummy tuck. This enables us to remove all the fat that should be removed prior to the tummy tuck procedure, where tightening loose muscle fascia and removing excess skin would be performed, along with the removal of up to one L of additional fat.
Although many patients qualify for a tummy tuck as a definitive procedure, heavier patients may require 2 procedures to meet their goal-liposuction followed by the tummy tuck sometime thereafter.
At Porcaro Cosmetic Surgery, we perform liposuction and tummy tuck operations in our AAAHC accredited facility under local tumescent and IV sedation as an out patient. All of our patients are discharged to home, under that care of a responsible adult, and are regularly seen by Dr. Porcaro during their recovery.
