Everyone likes to feel comfortable and attractive in their own skin. In pursuit of this, many of us aim to achieve an ideal frame that will help us feel better about ourselves. For women, achieving this ideal look may involve making improvements to the appearance of their breasts, something that can be done with the help of breast implants.

Breasts implants can be utilized for aesthetic and reconstructive purposes. Whether your needs involve reconstruction after a mastectomy or you simply want to improve your overall appearance, breast implants can provide satisfying results safely and effectively.

What is a Breast Augmentation Surgery?

A breast augmentation is a procedure that utilizes breast implants, sometimes in combination with a fat transfer, to enlarge the size of the breasts or improve breast volume that is usually lost after giving birth or losing weight. Clinically, the surgery is called augmentation mammoplasty.

Breast augmentation surgery has a range of physical and emotional benefits, but most importantly it does the following:

• Increases projection and fullness of the breasts
• Improves a woman’s bodily proportions
• Enhances self image and provides a boost in confidence

Types of Breast Implants

There are two types of breast implants available for those who want them. Your surgeon will recommend a type based on your needs and preferences. There are silicon implants and saline implants. Silicone gel-based implants are silicone shells that contain silicone plastic gel.

The thick gel inside silicone implants feel amazingly similar to natural breasts. In fact, most women who have silicone implants confirm this. These implants are only available to women who are 22 years old and above and are mostly used for reconstruction purposes.

Saline breast implants, on the other hand, contain sterile salt water. These implants are inserted when empty, and then filled with a saline solution once they fall in place. Women above 18 years of age can obtain saline breast implants for both cosmetic and reconstructive purposes.

When compared to silicone implants, saline implants have a higher chance of rupturing, but the solution is harmless and the body will absorb it without any issues.

Details About the Procedure

Since breasts continue to develop until a woman reaches her early twenties, saline-filled implants and silicone-filled implants are only used when a woman reaches 18 years and 22 years of age respectively. An initial consultation with your surgeon will help decide which type of implant is most suitable.

After the consultation, your surgeon will perform a medical evaluation to assess your body as a whole. Upon completion of your medical evaluation, your surgeon will prescribe certain medications to prep your body for the surgery.

Breast augmentation surgery is done on an outpatient basis. Your surgeon will use general anesthesia to help ease any discomfort that may arise. The procedure will begin with your surgeon making a small incision near the breast, either under the arm or around the nipples.

Your surgeon will insert the breast implant into a pocket situated either above or below the pectoral muscle. The procedure takes one to two hours, after which the incision is closed with a surgical tape or sutures.

You may experience some discomfort after the surgery, but it will subside in time. It is important to take time off from your daily routine to relax and recover. This means taking time off work and asking a friend or family member for help taking care of chores and other responsibilities.
