“Dr. Porcaro talks about new products that restore lost volume to the skin. He is shown doing an actual Botox treatment on a woman. Dr Porcaro says that Botox makes people look more relaxed and less stressed and makes people feel better about themselves. A patient says that Dr Porcaro is a good Botox and fille injector. Dr Porcaro says fillers make people look refreshed and more youthful. Another patient says how happy she is with the eyelid lift Dr Porcaro performed. Dr Porcaro says that patient return for Botox and fillers no matter what the economy is like. Another patient talks about how Dr Porcaro helped restore her self esteem. Another patient says how friendly Dr Porcaro’s staff is, says she “comes just to visit sometimes”.
Lip enhancement has become one of our most commonly requested injectable procedures. Actually, most patients say they want “bigger, augmented lips”. Most women (and men) don’t just want bigger lips, but more beautiful and naturally-appearing lips- lips that don’t look “done”.
(Note the significant degree of improvement in this lady’s lips after a single syringe of Juvederm)
There’s little doubt about the importance of the lips in identifying a woman’s attractiveness, beauty and sexuality. After assessing a woman’s eyes, we unconsciously focus on her lips, the aesthetic focal point of the lower face. When the lips are well defined and full they impart a sense of sexuality, youth and health. With age, however, your lips become far less attractive, thin, elongated and flat with shallow or deep vertical lines.
Although most patients seeking lip enhancement are women, men also benefit from the subtle addition of volume in their lips to replace volume that has been lost over the years. We see a growing number of men who are concerned about lip volume as well as other aging changes around the mouth.
As your face ages, the upper lip lengthens and the ends of the lips tend to hang down, contributing to the marionette lines. The volume loss and deflation of the lips that is the result of the aging process, coupled with changes in the jaw bones and damage to your skin around your lips related to years of sun damage, take their toll on both your upper and lower lip. The aging of the lips is hastened by smoking cigarettes.
Dr. Porcaro will listen to your concerns pertaining to your lips and mouth, perform a detailed exam and customize a treatment plan just right for you.
For decades, many products have been used in an effort to augment the lips, including collagen & silicone injections, silicone and Gortex implants and others. Unfortunately, some of the products used up to the present day have resulted in serious complications and even permanent deformity.
Over the years our practice has seen many woman who appear unnatural related to certain lip augmentation procedures. You have seen woman in shopping malls whose lips look “overdone”, significantly detracting from their sex appeal.
After having performed hundreds of lip enhancement procedures, our practice has developed a technique for enhancing your lips that is well tolerated, looks natural and lasts you around nine months to a year.
In experienced hands, your lips are most safely and naturally augmented and enhanced with Juvederm or Restylane. Restylane has FDA approval for lip augmentation and Restylane Silk was just FDA approved for the treatment of vertical lines around the lips- the “Bar Code lines” or “smoker’s lines” that cause lipstick to feather.
Because of our significant Restylane use, Porcaro Cosmetic Surgery is one of the first practices in the area to offer Restylane Silk, just FDA approved for lip enhancement and the treatment of the fine vertical lines around the lips!
Both Restylane and Juvederm are quite similar in that they are complex sugar molecules called hyaluronic acid. They inject smoothly and softly and can be molded. They work by attracting water to the treated areas and can even be reversed, in the unlikely even that you “change your mind”! Unlike other injectable products, your body will not “reject” these sugars; you have hyaluronic acid in your body, so there’s no chance of rejection.
If you are concerned with the vertical lines- “smoker’s lines”- of the upper and lower lips, you may require relaxation of the circular muscle-the orbicularis oris-that goes around the mouth, in addition to Restylane Silk.
Using Botox or Dysport, combined with Restylane or Juvederm, Dr Porcaro will frequently relax this muscle, lessening the appearance of your “smoker’s lines” and deep vertical lip lines, without impacting on the appearance or function of your mouth or your normal facial expressions.
Sometimes, even after restoring volume with Restylane or Juvederm and after relaxing the circular muscle of the mouth with Botox or Dysport, your lip enhancement may require additional treatment, such as an Obagi Blue Peel, microneedling or a fractionated CO2 laser to improve the skin quality around your lips. These treatments can replace old, thick, damaged skin with healthy, new skin, resulting in additional improvement.
Nightly Isotretenoin application will mitigate some of the damaging effects of the sun. Certainly, our practice recommends that you protect your lips (and face) with the Obagi SPF 50, worn whenever you are outdoors.
Because the lips are extremely sensitive, we routinely perform lip enhancement with the help of anesthesia. Few women (or men!) can tolerate lip enhancement without adequate anesthesia.
We first place a topical anesthetic inside the roof and floor of your mouth. We then proceed with a dental block, similar to what a dentist does. After about 5 minutes, we’re ready to start. In younger patients, where these’s minimal volume loss, one syringe (1 ml) of either Juvederm or Restylane is usually sufficient. Older ladies or women and men with advanced changes may require two syringes. Many patients benefit from the muscle relaxation afforded by Botox or Dysport, as mentioned above.
It is our practice to be conservative with lip enhancement, We have found that it is better to “start slowly” and add additional filler only as needed, once you have had the opportunity to assess the degree of improvement you have gotten from the initial treatment. Usually, one syringe of Restylane or Juvederm is all that is needed for the vast majority of women and men.
The most common response our practices hears immediately after lip enhancement is “I love my lips!” and “I didn’t feel a thing!”.
Our goal in enhancing your lips is not for you to have “big lips” but rather to have beautifully sculpted, natural, esthetically pleasing lips. In enhancing your lips, we strive to better define the many specific natural landmarks and unique zones of both your upper and lower lip that may have been lost over time or simply never present to begin with! The best lip enhancements are the ones that look natural; lips that “you can’t tell” whether they are natural or have been enhanced!
