Sculptra Sculpture's active ingredient, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), is a synthetic bio activator and is not considered a true filler. It was approved for facial atrophy in HIV patients in 2004 by the FDA, but it has been used internationally since 1999 in an estimate of 150,000 patients in more than 30 countries. Aging and HIV are associated with lipoatrophy resulting in loss of healthy looking contours. Poly-L-lactic acid restores volume loss and smoothes wrinkles/folds from the inside-out, returning desired contours. It has been used "off label" for facial cosmetic enhancement for years.![]() Technique
Sculptra is injected after first coating the areas with a topical anesthetic and reconstituting the freeze dried preparation. When injected into the check for mild to moderate lower facial lipoatrophy, crisscross and tunneling technique with a fine needle is employed, massaging after every 3-4 injections. Injections into the temple region requires depot of product instead of tunneling, followed by massage. .
